To have!

The verb haben follows the endings pattern we’ve seen before, but there are two places to watch out for! There’s no b in the du and er / sie / es forms!

haben
to have
ich
I
habe
have
du
you
hast
have
er / sie / es
he / she / it
hat
has
wir
we
haben
have
ihr
you all
habt
have
sie
they
haben
have

They’re baa‑aack!

You might remember that some verbs have a stem‑vowel change in the du and er / sie / es forms! In essen, for example, the e changes to an i.

Take a look at these verbs, which change the e to an ie:

lesen, sehen
to read, to see
ich
I
lese, sehe
read, see
du
you
liest, siehst
read, see
er / sie / es
he / she / it
liest, sieht
reads, sees
wir
we
lesen, sehen
read, see
ihr
you all
lest, seht
read, see
sie
they
lesen, sehen
read, see

The other type of stem‑vowel changing verbs are ones that change an a to an ä.

laufen, schlafen
to walk, to sleep
ich
I
laufe, schlafe
walk, sleep
du
you
läufst, schläfst
walk, sleep
er / sie / es
he / she / it
läuft, schläft
walks, sleeps
wir
we
laufen, schlafen
walk, sleep
ihr
you all
lauft, schlaft
walk, sleep
sie
they
laufen, schlafen
walk, sleep

Fahren, tragen and waschen also fit into this group!
