Dative Prepositions

You’ve seen that when something is indirectly affected by an action, it gets put in the dative case.

Er gibt der Frau einen Apfel.
He gives the woman an apple.

You’ve also seen that things use dative after certain verbs.

Ich danke der Frau.
I thank the woman.

Well, there are also some words like with or from, which also use dative!

Du kommst mit deinem Partner.
You come with your partner.
Du lernst von ihm.
You learn from him.

Tricky Meanings

Aus and von can both mean from, but what’s the difference? Use aus for where you were born or grew up, and von for where you just came from!

Ich komme aus Deutschland.
I come from Germany.
Sie sind Besucher von einem anderen Stern.
They are visitors from another star.

Going home and being at home each have special phrases, too!

Gehst du nach Hause oder bist du zu Hause?
