Not!

To say not in German, just use nicht! It often goes right after the verb, like in English.

Die Katze ist lustig.
The cat is funny.
Die Katze ist nicht lustig.
The cat is not funny.
Er versteht.
He understands.
Er versteht nicht.
He does not understand.

German Sounds

Let’s practice some sounds with the letter g!

fertig
fertig, traurig, lustig
(as in “humid”)

In German, the ‑ig sound at the end of a word is pronounced the same as the ch in ich that we practiced earlier! Remember it’s similar to the h in humid!

gesund
gesund, gut, Gemüse
(as in “good”)

The German g at the beginning of a word is pronounced like the g in good. A g is never pronounced like the English g as in gym.

Speak your mind!

Germans typically will let you know they’re unhappy if there is a problem. It may seem impolite to us, but it’s normal for Germans to be straightforward and sometimes blunt. Don’t be afraid to use nicht to let other German speakers know how you feel!

Es ist nicht fertig!
It is not ready!
