Earlier, we saw that ein goes with masculine and neuter nouns, and eine goes with feminine ones. But with the, you can easily tell the gender of each noun!
When learning nouns in German, it’s useful to learn them together with der, die, or das. That helps you remember the noun’s gender!
Masculine | der Junge the boy der Mann the man |
---|---|
Feminine | die Frau the woman |
Neuter | das Brot the bread das Wasser the water |
Germans pride themselves on their delicious Brot varieties! There are over 1,000 types of bread in Germany, because of the many types of grains. If you ever visit Germany, be sure to go early to a Bäckerei to try some freshly baked bread! And don’t be afraid to try darker bread like pumpernickel.
Be prepared for some differences with Wasser as well. Water in a restaurant is not free. If you order water, you’ll receive a bottle of sparkling or mineral water. If you want tap water, ask for Leitungswasser, but be prepared to get some odd looks!
