Who’s on first?

To say something is first, second, third, and so on, you’ll need a different set of numbers! Up to neunzehn, you usually just add a ‑t to the normal number. But there are a few oddballs to watch out for!

erst first
zweit second
dritt third
viert fourth
fünft fifth
sechst sixth
siebt seventh
acht eighth
neunt ninth
zehnt tenth

How many is it?

Just like other adjectives in German, you’ll need to put endings on words like erst and siebt. These endings depend on the word’s case!

Ein zweiter Autor schläft.
A second author is sleeping.
Ich sehe einen zweiten Autor.
I see a second author.

It also depends on whether you use der words or ein words!

Das ist mein erstes Pferd.
That is my first horse.

Der Trainer will das erste Pferd.
The trainer wants the first horse.
