Il faut passer par Paris

In French, we use the expression passer par to say how to get somewhere.

Pour entrer dans le château, il faut passer par cette porte.
To get in the castle, you have to go through this door.

Je passe par cette rue pour aller au travail.
I take this street to go to work.
Il faut passer par le hall pour prendre l’ascenseur.
You have to cross the lobby to take the elevator.

Ne te gare pas ici, c’est interdit !

We’ve seen that Ne mange pas ! means Don’t eat!

When we tell someone not do something using verbs with se, like se perdre, se garer, and se dépêcher, there will be a vous or te in the sentence.

Ne te perds pas !
Don’t get lost!

Ne vous garez pas là !
Don’t park there!

For the sentences with te, remember to drop the s on the end of the verb if the infinitive ends in ‑er, like se dépêcher.

Ne te dépêche pas !
Don’t hurry!

Je ne connais personne

In French, we use the expression ne... personne to say not anyone.

Il n’aime personne.
He doesn’t like anyone.

Je n’appelle personne.
I’m not calling anyone.

Elle n’aide personne.
She’s not helping anyone.
