In English we say my mother, my father, etc., but in French you’d say mon père and ma mère. That’s because père is masculine and mère is feminine. The same goes for your, his, and her.
Masculine | Feminine |
---|---|
mon père my father |
ma mère my mother |
ton frère your brother |
ta sœur your sister |
son fils his / her son |
sa fille his / her daughter |
Fille and femme have multiple meanings! Fille means girl or daughter, and femme means woman or wife. Use context to decide which meaning is intended.
In English, we say Marie’s cat to show that the cat belongs to Marie. But in French, you’d say le chat de Marie, which literally means the cat of Marie.
Before vowels, de becomes d’.
