Elle continue à chanter

We say commencer à and penser à to mean to start to and to think about. If you want to say to continue to do something, use continuer à, followed by the infinitive.

La fille continue à parler.
The girl continues to talk.

Les enfants continuent à regarder la télé.
The children continue to watch TV.

Ils ont appris une chanson

We’ve seen that the verb prendre changes into pris when we use it in the passé composé. Similarly, apprendre will change into appris, and comprendre changes into compris.

Elle a compris la leçon.
She understood the lesson.

J’ai appris un nouveau mot.
I have learned a new word.

Tu as pris de belles photos.
You have taken beautiful pictures.

Two more verbs change in unexpected ways. Vouloir changes into the form voulu, and pouvoir changes into the form pu when we use them in passé composé.

Il a voulu partir.
He wanted to leave.

Nous avons pu finir à temps.
We have been able to finish on time.

Nous partageons nos idées

When you use nous for the present form of verbs ending in ‑ger (like manger), there will be an additional ‑e in the form.

Nous mangeons du riz.
We are eating rice.

Nous partageons le repas.
We are sharing the meal.

Nous nageons maintenant.
We are swimming now.
