Bonjour !

Like English, some French greetings depend on the time of day.

Bonjour
Good morning or Good afternoon
Bonsoir
Good evening

Note that Bonne soirée (Have a good evening) and Bonne nuit (Have a good night) are used to say goodbye; they can’t be used to greet people.

You can say Salut regardless of the time of day, so long as you’re speaking informally or to family or friends.

Salut can also mean hi and bye!

How are you?

Ça va can be used to ask how someone is doing... and to answer!

Bonjour, comment ça va ?
Good morning, how are you doing?
Ça va bien, et toi ?
I’m doing well, and you?
Ça va.
I am fine.

Accents

In French, an accent mark over a letter can create a new sound.

jeje
as in "about"
éjournée
similar to "bay," but without the final y sound
ètrès
as in "bet"

If the last letter of a word is an e, (without an accent) we usually don’t pronounce it. For example, the final e in femme, bonne, and journée is silent.

Bonne journée !
Have a good day!

Did you notice?

In French, you put a space before question marks (?) and exclamation marks (!).

Au revoir, à bientôt !
Goodbye, see you soon!

Tu es français ?
Are you French?
